Halloween doesn’t have to be a fearful experience for you or your children. Trick-or-treating can be a fun night out with the family, especially if you follow some simple safety tips.
Halloween Safety Tips
- Plan A Route In Advance – Whether you are in your own neighborhood or visiting somebody else, it is a good idea to have a route mapped out. Have a map or show your children the route; this way if anyone does get lost, they know where to go next.
- Be Sure Your Child Can Be Seen – If your child has a costume that is hard to spot in the dark, make sure they can be seen by anybody passing them. Have your child carry a flashlight while they trick-or-treat.
- Revisit Stranger Rules – At Halloween, it can be easy for kids to forget all about the rules they have been taught in regards to strangers. That person that pulls up in the car and offers them candy, or tries to get them to come inside, may seem normal to them on Halloween. Review the stranger danger rules before heading out.
- Stay Together – If your child is not yet in their teen years, shadow them through the neighborhoods. If you are allowing them to go it alone this year, be sure they go in a group and remind them to stay together at all times.
- Make Sure Your Child Can See – While your child may beg you for that costume with a full mask, it is always best to make sure they can see without obstruction. Children need to be able to see what they are doing and where they are going.
- Prepare For The Little Ones – Little ones that have a tendency to wander or run off may do better in a stroller or wagon; this way you can keep your eye on them at all times. You may also want to consider what time they usually go to bed and plan to head out early.
- Don’t Eat Any Candy – Make sure your kids wait to eat their candy until they get home. This will allow you time to look at the packaging and make sure the goodies haven’t been tampered with.
- Candy Check – Let your kids know that they can eat their candy after you have checked it. It is always a good idea for parents to go through the candy and make sure that all the candy is safe to eat, before handing it back to your children.
